Queer led, since 2021

Rainbow Beach Tennis Victoria

LGBTQIA+ sport in Melbourne, played on the sand at West Beach, St Kilda — next to the West Beach Pavilion.

What this is

Rainbow Beach Tennis Victoria is a queer-led beach tennis club. It has run on the sand at West Beach since 2021.

Sessions are social. There is no ladder to climb and nothing to qualify for — people come, play, and stay for as long as they feel like.

Most people arrive having never played, and quite a few arrive not knowing anybody.

If you want to bring your partner, a friend or someone from work who isn't queer, they're welcome too.

The Sunset Series

The Sunset Series is Rainbow Beach Tennis's own run of evening events on the sand at West Beach.

Each one is an evening of games as the light goes, and there's usually somewhere to go afterwards.

What happens at a session

Someone from the club meets you when you arrive, so you're not working out where to stand.

You'll be shown how to hold the racquet and how the ball behaves on sand. It takes a few minutes.

Games are short and everyone rotates, so you play with plenty of people rather than the same pair all evening.

Nobody is any good at this at first, which is most of the fun of it.

What to bring

Water, and something you don't mind getting sand in.

Sunscreen or a hat for a daytime session.

Racquets and balls are provided — you don't need any equipment to come.

Coming along

The next Rainbow session is below — it books through the Victoria Beach Tennis booking page, like everything else the club runs.

The Sunset Series is $8 a session. Other sessions take a pass or casual entry — prices are on the prices page.
